Children, just like adults, can develop musculoskeletal complaints. This can happen as early as during delivery, and particularly in the years that follow as they grow up through the inevitable falls and tumbles of childhood.
Falls, minor accidents, long hours of sitting at school and sports activities can all be potential causes of complaints. Children often recover quickly, but when complaints persist, they should certainly be taken seriously.
Children are often unable to indicate exactly where they are in pain, so it is important to know that this is frequently expressed as headaches or stomach aches. Behaviour can also reveal that a child is not feeling well — they may become very tired, unusually restless, or their sleeping habits may change.
Reduced resistance can be accompanied by physical complaints, especially in children with underlying conditions such as asthma, frequent throat, nose and ear complaints, or scoliosis.
These conditions cannot be cured by chiropractic, but their effects on the body can be limited so that the child can grow up as normally as possible. For example, children with asthma tend to use chest breathing primarily, which can cause increased muscle tension in the shoulder region along with joint blockages in the upper back, ribs and neck.
Treatment of children is not the same as for adults. The physical examination is carried out in a playful way, following a thorough consultation with the child and parent(s), after which treatment can take place.
The chiropractic joint corrections used are tailored to children and are virtually painless. Children generally recover faster than adults, so treatment frequencies are often lower — though this depends on the complaints and the patient. The chiropractor will propose a suitable personal treatment plan.
Neurological chiropractors have been treating children of all ages for over 100 years. Neurological chiropractic is highly effective and, above all, very safe for children. Treatment consists of gentle pressure techniques to correct blockages and is not comparable to treatment for adults.
